Preparing Your Home's Exterior for Ontario Winters

October 26, 2026•2 min read

Freeze-thaw cycles find every existing weak point in a home's exterior — a clogged gutter, a small gap in the siding, a soft spot on the roof edge. None of these are dramatic problems in October. By February, any one of them can be.

Gutters and Downspouts

Clear gutters before the first hard freeze. A gutter clogged with fall leaves holds water that freezes, expands, and can pull hangers loose or crack a seam — problems that show up as ice damming and overflow all winter long.

Siding and Trim

Walk the exterior and look for gaps, loose panels, or cracked caulking around trim and openings. Small gaps let moisture in behind the siding, where freeze-thaw cycles do the most damage over a winter, out of sight until spring.

Roof Edges and Soffit/Fascia

Check for lifted or damaged shingles near the roof edge and any soft spots in the fascia. This is where ice dams tend to form first, and a small issue here in the fall is a much smaller job than the same issue after a winter of freezing and thawing.

Windows and Doors

Confirm seals and weatherstripping are intact around windows and exterior doors. Drafts aren't just an energy cost — persistent moisture at a window frame over winter can lead to bigger problems by spring.

A Simple Pre-Winter Checklist

  • Clean and inspect gutters, confirm downspouts direct water away from the foundation

  • Walk the siding for gaps, loose sections, or damaged caulking

  • Check the roof edge and soffit/fascia for lifted shingles or soft spots

  • Test window and door seals for drafts

Frequently Asked Questions

How late in the season is too late to do this?

Ideally before the first hard freeze, but addressing issues any time before winter fully sets in is better than waiting until spring reveals the damage.

Do I need a professional inspection, or can I do this myself?

A visual walk-through catches a lot, but soffit, fascia, and roof-edge issues aren't always visible from the ground — worth a professional look if it's been a few years since your last inspection.

What's the most common issue you see going into winter?

Clogged gutters are consistently the most preventable, and one of the most damaging if left unaddressed through a full winter.

Is it worth doing this every year, even if nothing seemed wrong last winter?

Yes. Small issues compound over multiple freeze-thaw cycles, so a yearly check catches problems while they're still minor.
